Blocked keys

The Blocked keys list displays all keys that have been blocked within the customer system, allowing you to see at a glance which keys are currently denied access. Any key on this list cannot be used to unlock any locks.

Below, the main concepts related to blocking keys—key blocking groups and blocklists, and their connection to blocked keys—are explained in detail.

Key blocking groups

A key blocking group is a group of locking devices—such as locks and online devices—that share the same list of blocked keys called blocklist. The blocklist determines which keys are denied access to the locking devices in that group.

Key blocking groups allow adding 500 blocked keys to each lock in the key blocking group. If a blocked key has access to several key blocking groups, the system automatically generates blocklist updates for all key blocking groups where the key has access.

Blocklists

The blocklist is a list of blocked keys carried by all the keys and locks within a key blocking group. All the keys and locks in a key blocking group distribute the blocklist via the D2D (device-to-device) network. When a phone key is used on a lock, it automatically updates that lock with the most recent blocklist. Then when a key fob is used on the same lock, the key fob receives the latest blocklist from it, and can distribute it to locks with an older version of the blocklist.

How key blocking works

When a key is blocked (or unblocked), the information of the blocked (or unblocked) key is added to the blocklist of the key blocking group it belongs to, and the version number of the blocklist is automatically updated. This version number increases by one each time a change is made.

How blocklists are updated to locks

Lock blocklists are updated automatically by:

  • Phone keys, when they are used on a lock.
  • Key fobs belonging to the same key blocking group, when they are used on a lock.

Blocklist information can also be updated manually:

  • By visiting locks one‑by‑one with a programming key connected to a laptop with iLOQ Manager+ open.

How keys receive the blocklist

Phone keys

  • Over-the-air: Through the mobile network.
  • From a lock: If a phone key has an older version of the blocklist than a lock, the lock updates the blocklist on the phone key. Now, the phone key can take the newer blocklist to the next lock.

Key fobs

  • From a lock: If a key fob has an older version of the blocklist than a lock, the lock updates the blocklist on the key fob. Now, the key fob can take the newer blocklist to the next lock.

How to check if a lock has the latest blocklist

The Blocklist up to date column on the Locking devices list indicates whether the lock has the latest blocklist version or not.

  • If there is a check mark, the lock already has the latest blocklist version and no actions are needed.
  • If there is an x, the blocklist must be updated to the lock. This can be done by visiting the lock with a key that has the latest blocklist version.

Note: When a key fob is blocked, the updated blocklist must be distributed to all locks the key fob has access to. This is done through the D2D (device-to-device) network as other users access the locks with their keys. Only once the updated blocklist has been updated to all the relevant locks the key fob is effectively blocked.

It’s important to note that the blocklist update may not reach every lock during normal everyday key usage. For example, if a lock is located in a remote area, the blocklist update may not be delivered to it unless an administrator specifically visits the lock to perform the update.
